Description

Alright, so! Here's my take on merging two powerhouses from the new set into one single deck: Showdown from the Skalds and Goldspan Dragon.

The former is, most of the time, a draw 4 for 4 with significant upside. It can be cast fairly safely on t4, but works best t5 onward, while the latter either ramps, or gives you mana to protect it.

The gameplan is tempo aggression. You want to delay your opponent while applying our brand of pressure, baiting unfavorable plays and developing your board.

Some things worth mentioning:

  • I shied away from counterspells to better capitalize on Skald, which is why I'm running Unsubstantiateimage and Shell Shieldimage. Since both spells are at two mana, they can be cast after attacking with a Golspan on T5.
  • Roil Eruption can make use of the treasures generated by Goldspan to go face, while also being on-curve removal.
  • Mythos of Vadrok replaced Shatterskull, as it's much better removal with lesser mana (5 damage for 4 vs Shatterskull's 2 damage for 4), and is very flexible (can target up to 5 targets and make them unblockable thanks to jeskai mana). It's a risky swap, as we're losing out on Shatterskull's land side, but one I feel is worth taking the chance.

Cards I'm considering:

  • Bonecrusher Giant (Tremendous value in one card, but it doesn't quite fit the current plan, and I wouldn't know what to swap for it);
  • Starnheim Unleashed (capitalizes on treasures generated by Goldspan, but is a risky card to add);
  • Shatterskull Smashing (replaced by Mythos of Vadrok);
  • Banishing Light or Ravenform (permanent removal is great, but either are a bit slow for this deck. The former hits anything, while the latter can't be undone)
