Learn more Download For WindowsCloned the original Golgari build and turned it into a Sultai build. I'm liking this a bit more, but that could just be because I'm a bit in love with Sublime Epiphany. The piloting guide is a bit different than the Golgari build, as you're more likely to be holding up your counterspells and flash cards. Some other big changes, Chevill, Bane of Monsters is out of the picture (for now), as your draw triggers will come from your added draw spells and extra triomes. The Rankle // Questing Beast // Elder Gargaroth package is still solid for board presence and card draw (minus QB for that last bit).
Early Game: Much of the early game will dictate if you draw into your hand disruption, counter spells, or your creatures. This particular flexibility is part of why I prefer this Sultai build. Play with what's in your hand, particularly for the first game when you aren't sure what your opponent has.
Mid Game: If you're facing aggro, hold up your counter spells and kill spells. In all other cases (as is usually the case in new set releases), you'll be dealing with some durdle decks. Apply the pressure with Questing Beast and Rankle, Master of Pranks and get slammin'! If there's something particular icky on board, you have a host of removal to deal with it at 4-5 mana. Again, you can play this more however your opponent plays. Channel your inner blue!
Late Game: With your threats on board, feel free to really just push far ahead by holding up for Sublime Epiphany. This deck won't close the game out quite as fast as the Golgari build, so don't get too greedy with letting your creatures die.
Strengths: Control and other mid-range decks. If we're being honest, this deck is a tadddd bit of a Sultai pile, it's not quite as elegant as the Golgari build, but I think it's a stronger deck. Inscription of Ruin was a really nice add for this, as it allows you great flexibility at 3 mana to deal with what your opponent has.
Weaknesses: Aggro. We have less creatures this time around, and instead are a bit reliant on counter spells. When you're on the draw against aggro (scary!!), you'll need to ensure you have interaction in your opening hand if you want to stabilize more quickly.
Sideboarding Tips: Against aggro, take out Binding the Old Gods and 2, if not all 3 copies of Sublime Epiphany. Scavenging Ooze and Cling to Dust can really keep you alive here. I may consider moving Extinction Event to the main deck, as losing odd creatures isn't the worst for us (as much as I love Gargaroth, it's just a removal magnet, and generates no value the turn it comes down) so that really just leaves the Visionary, and, they did their job when they E'edTB!
If you've tried the Golgari build and liked it, give this a shot. This deck might have a bit more staying power as the format gets solidified down and you'll need to counter key components to the top decks. Happy battling!
Edits from Feb 18: For the Star City Games tournmant, I tightened up the list. I removed the Negates, as Duress should deal with those spells, added some more creatures, notable, Nighthawk Scavenger which is brutal against the current meta.
