Build up your board while exiling everything and occasionally wiping. Wanderer both exiles large threats, and protects gideon and champion who already quite evasive. Shalai also gives everything hexproof, while providing a nice evasive body to put counters on.
Ashes triggers everytime a creature dies. The ultimate combo is casting a board whipe with ashes, heliod, and either enough devotion for heliod by himself, or Gideon on the field. Creatures die, yours don't, you gain life, Heliod puts a ton of counters down. Gideon can make another creature indestructable to survive the wipe.
Have considered Daxos over ashes. For the same CMC Daxos has more devotion, as well as additional opportunities for life gain. However, Ashes tends stick on the field where Daxos can be a priority target for the opponent. Ashes stops oven decks in their tracks, preventing cat reanimation, and balancing out pings with lifegain.
Champion is another card I've thought about changing, although it works quite well with the themes of this deck (has a nice devotion cost, can infinitely chump combat damage away from gideon or the wanderer in the opponent's turn, and is itself quite evasive.)
While many other mono-white decks do lifegain + counters, this deck is appealing for its large amount of removal, as well as the unusual permenants it presents that can often render a lot of the opponent's own removal meaningless.
Definitely not competative, and very week to some superfriends decks - but a lot of fun to pilot nontheless
