Learn more Download For WindowsThrusday is the release of War of The Spark on MTGA and as I do on every expansion, I update my Selesnya Tokens list with the new cards.
WAR brings us cards that are alternatives or little upgrades to some of the cards we already had on standard, so the list doesn't changes too much from the last one.
The first new addition is Ajani, the Greathearted. With a set full of planeswalkers was rather difficult to not have one that fits the deck. The Ajani's passive ability gives all of our creatures Vigilance. That makes us able to play more agressively as we don't need to hold back creatures for blocking on opponents turn or for casting Convoke spells. The -2 puts +1/+1 counters on all creatures (no need for explanation). Finally the +1 it's not bad against aggro decks faster than us, even if we usually have a good match-up against them.
The second addition is Huatli's Raptor, a 2 drop with good stats that Proliferates when enters the battlefield. Raptor fits a spot we lacked of on Selesnya Tokens: all the 2 drops we had until now on standard were good on some match-ups or just ok creatures overall but didn't had synergy with the deck. Now we have a creature that synergizes well with our deck. On specific match-ups Tithe Taker or Kraul Harpooner are better, but these can be put on the sideboard and brought in when needed.
The next two cards can be good on the list, but I'm still not sure if they are better than what we had.
Pledge of Unity gives a +1/+1 counter at instant speed to all our creatures and gains us life. It seems a good inclusion overall, but the problem is that it doesn't protect us from common boardclears like Kaya's Wrath, Deafening Clarion or the new Time Wipe or Solar Blaze. So maybe Unbreakable Formation is still better. We will have to wait and see how prevalent is aggro on the new meta.
I only see Tolsimir, Friend of Wolves as a situational one-of that sometimes it's a 4-for-1. But Trostani Discordant is a really strong card on Selesnya Tokens so I'm not sold on this one yet.
As a last point I'm gonna mention Karn's Bastion, Gideon Blackblade and Mobilized District as possible inclusions on the deck.
Bastion let's us proliferate with the spare mana on the late game, but it's really slow and we will not always have +1/+1 counters on creatures, but a colorless mana will not affect our mana base too much.
Gideon can be bonkers after Emmara, Soul of the Accord because he can give her indestructible and generate free tokens each turn. Also it's a difficult card to deal with so he could be an inclusion. The problem is that the list is pretty tight and I don't know what I would remove to include him.
The last one is Mobilized District. I'm waiting to test it, but I think that it will be a must include on this deck and in a lot of other decks. It's a pain in the ass for control and having 4 different legendaries that reduces it's cost shouldn't be difficult to activate for 2-3 mana. I will probably start replacing a Forest and a Plains for 2 of these and adjust the final number through testing.
To close out I'm gonna say to take the sideboard with a grain of salt, because depending on what is prevailing on the meta, those cards will have to change.
