This is an ARTISAN (uncommon/common only) deck I put together, because I wanted to flesh out some underutilized cards in Magic: The Gathering.
In the set Zendikar Rising the "Landfall" keyword gives us benefits for simply progressing the game (playing lands) and I wanted to do something with my cardboard at home. Thus came this deck list to life.
MAIN:
Murasa Rootgrazer is the signature draft uncommon for white/green in the set. This creature allows us to bounce a land “ever” “single” “turn” back to our hand, if left unchecked. Triggering “Landfall” so many times can come in quite handy. The rootgrazer also acts as the support card for this deck, so treat it that way.
Fearless Fledgling is the main beat stick with evasion in this deck. The fact that it gets a permanent power boost per land is underestimated. Pair this birdy with the Skyclave Pick-Axe and you've got yourself the most fearsome chick in the entire game! Can we also take a short moment and appreciate the art work of this card? It's freakin' hilarious, what a win on so many levels.
Territorial Scythecat is the second creature in this set, that gets a +1/+1 counter, permanently boosting is power, for each land drop. The fact that this card has evasion in form of “trample” on it makes it strong enough to play. Again, paired with Skyclave Pick-Axe makes for a serious beating.
Prowling Felidar is the third creature with the +1/+1 counter per land drop, but undeniably the weakest of all creatures. Having “vigilance” isn't evasion, but having a body of 4/5 or even 5/6 is no joke. Swap this creature out, if you think you have better success with another card.
Skyclave Pick-Axe over performs in this deck. Attaching itself automatically the first time around is crucial for surprise damage.
Canyon Jerboa is in the deck to help push damage through. Note that it reads “creatures you control” WITHOUT the word “other”, which means it buffs itself per land drop trigger. This card will rack up damage ON TOP of all the other landfall triggers happening in this deck.
Sejiri Shelter An extra land, if needed, helps keep our key creatures alive, or help us finish the game with “protection”. One of the fewer decks, where this can serve TRIPLE duty.
Tangled Florahedron Another extra land, or an extra ramp, in case we somehow get mana screwed. (22 lands + 4 MDFC feels like enough to be able to trigger landfall).
Roiling Regrowth is a busted card and the reason this deck works as well as it does. INSTANT speed worth of TWO triggers on anything our creatures can produce. There's simply no downside to this card. We ramp, we trigger, we thin the deck for more action.
Charge Through is a god's send for this deck. INSTANT speed “trample” on one of our creatures AFTER blocks have been declared will push through damage. It converts OP's good blocks into a losing position. On top of that, "card draw" for 1 mana is the consistency many decks can only dream of. Don't underestimate this card!
Emergent Sequence is necessary in this deck. I've tried many games without this card and I couldn't manage enough “landfall” triggers to end games. It fixes colours early, but with a downside of making our extra land vulnerable against removal, but it also helps us with the creature count for equiping the Skyclave Pick-Axe
CHEAT SHEET:
15 sources of both white and green mana should be more than enough to get colors right on turn 1 (93.4% for all the math nerds out there). 9 untapped sources of both white and green feels just about right (86.3% untapped on turn 3). Neither 1-drop in this deck is needed turn 1, so fixing colours is IMPORTANT.
KNOW THY STRENGTH:
Unlike the red/green landfall deck I showcase, this deck is more of a mid-range (sometimes one-turn-kill) deck. Setting up the engine is crucial for attacking in later turns. Other hyper aggressive decks will beat you, as this deck doesn't have much interaction. On the flip side, you WILL be able to explode out of nowhere with an axe wielding chick on steroids, simply HILARIOUS.
FUTURE SIGHT:
I will be building several flavourful 60 card artisan decks, with mechanics I deem fun enough to built around. Keep an eye out for the next one.
Thank you for reading!
