I recently made a deck based around Cyclops Superconductor and a few other energy-based cards called Izzet Prowess Fling. It was relatively consistent, but not as explosive as I had hoped. After a couple of weeks, I found two different ways to get a turn one kill with Cyclops, one on the play and one on the draw, that resulted in this deck. Hence the name, Izzet 2-Fling (although it's pretty much mono-red). Now, this deck really does want its nut-draw, or it's a bit dead in the water. That said, when it works, it works spectacularly!
Cyclops Superconductor is our all-star in this deck with Kiln Fiend
as a back-up. We have a number of pump spells, but Reckless Charge
and Mutagenic Growth
are the most important. Clout of the Dominus
is a sneaky back-up pump spell that works really well with Cyclops as it gives it haste, plus two, and protection. The rest of the deck is mana production, card draw, or mana fixing.
So, here are the two different ways to get a turn one kill with this deck. The first goes like this: Mountain, 2x Rite of Flame
, Lotus Petal
, Cyclops Superconductor
, 2x Manamorphose
, Reckless Charge
, and Reckless Abandon
. Played in this order, we get a Cyclops down with two spare mana, draw two extra cards for free with Manamorphose, play the Charge for plus four and haste, then attack for eight damage, followed by Abandon, which stacks on four more damage and lets us sac Cyclops for the final eight. On the draw, we need: Mountain
, 2x Rite of Flame
, Lotus Petal
, Cyclops Superconductor
, 2x Manamorphose
, 2x Mutagenic Growth
, and Fling
. This version pumps the Cyclops up to a ten/ten, then flings it for twenty damage. Pretty sweet!
Due to this plan being very unlikely, the sideboard tries to mitigate some problems by turning this deck into more of a mono-red deck. Lightning Bolt for direct damage, Clockwork Percussionist
to add some more bodies if we need them with added impulse draw, and a couple of utility cards in Tormod's Crypt
and Temur Battle Rage
.
Ordinarily, I would do a price breakdown so you would know how much this deck costs to make. I decided against it this time as this isn't a deck I'd encourage you to go out and buy these cards for, but something you should mess around with if you already have them. Dropping roughly $140 (or £100/€130) on a deck like this is a tad ridiculous.
As usual, there are alternatives to what we find in this deck. Conjurer's Bauble could be swapped out for Experimental Synthesizer
or another impulse draw effect; Clout of the Dominus
could be traded for Ancestral Anger
, but Anger is less impactful on its own despite giving us trample and card draw (the two reasons it's here in the first place); and things like Lightning Bolt
could be traded for counters or more utility cards if Bolts aren't cutting the mustard.
Hopefully, you'll get some wins with this deck. Good luck, and happy flinging!
