Knights are going to be a popular aggro deck with this coming rotation, so I give you Basri's Boros Boys. Featuring consistent turn 4/5 victories. Something I didn't realize until the deck was built (I'm an arena player), if you are a paper player, this is competitive on a budget!
Play creatures, turn them sideways, and race your opponents life total to nill. Starting with turn one we have fervent champion and venerable knights that will run away with things early if our opponent does not respect them. As the other one drop we run weaselback redcap as a non-human knight that can trigger Winota, and do not underestimate its activated ability like your opponent will. I've activated it 3 to 4 times and ended games after an opponent just thought they were going to take a 1/1 and start there turn. At the top of the curve we have four copies of Basri's trusty ol' Lt. which helps keep attackers on board against sweepers and big bodied blockers, and when Basri's Lt. activates it leaves us with a non-human knight that will trigger our Winota, and we run three copies of winota. While running three copies of winota, we mostly use basri ket's -2 ability to get our non-human creatures on turn 3. When she does trigger, we NEVER whiff. Seriously, I've played at least 20 games with this deck and have yet to whiff on a Winota trigger. On top of that, she's a decent body, and looks sexy swinging an embercleave. Aside from embercleave we forgo glorious anthem and run circle of loyalty to pump our creatures. A hand full of glorious anthems just feels bad compared to a hand full of Basri Ket planeswalkers, inspiring veterans, and a circle of loyalty which are essentially doing the same thing. In addition to circle of loyalty pumping our creatures, it has the ability to create a non-human knight so we can trigger Winota. We also often cast it for one less mana than we can cast glorious anthem. Who doesn't want to pay less mana for more powerful effects?
This deck deals with quite a few +1/1 counters, as such, I normally suggest that we spread these out among our creatures as to not have all of our eggs in one basket. With this deck, going wide is better than going tall almost every time. If we have Basri's Lt. On the field, it is important to gauge which creatures your opponents are going to try to block/remove so we can't trigger Winota. Try to anticipate this and put the counters on the creatures that trigger Winota, that way, if your opponent kills them, they are replaced by non-human knights that are pumped by inspiring veteran and trigger Winota.
Since the shocklands are rotating and we don't know if they will be back soon, tournament grounds is an excellent mana source that makes sure we aren't slowed down by running multiple colors; so often time, the mana base of this deck feels butter smooth like that of a mono colored deck. The only exception being that Basri Ket can be difficult to play if we get a starting hand full of tourney grounds and red mana. I've also ran into a hand full of tourney grounds and not been able to slam Winota on turn four like we want to.
I would actually run the Boros shocklands, four copies of winota, and four copies of skylight vanguard right up until rotation as that would give us the juice we need to run more copies of Winota against the risk of our mana base not being where we want it on turn four, but I wanted to deliver something that could be touted as rotation proof from the get.
I really hope you enjoy the brew. If you have a card, cards, or general deck style you'd like to see built, please ask, and we'll get it done. Thanks for all the support, and, as always, good luck!
