Arena Standard - Orzhov Go-Face

Midrange

Recently Orzhov Midrange decks have risen to the top of the metagame, which has been very exiting for me since I've been brewing Orzhov since rotation, and before the banning of Alrund's Epiphanyimage and Divide by Zeroimage, Izzet turns and to a lesser extent other control decks singlehandedly prevented Orzhov from being competitive. I spent a lot of time searching for tech to make Orzhov decks capable of being aggresive, since that was necessary to salvage the turns matchup, but even with turns banned, I still think that tech is the right direction to head with the deck. This is my Bo1 ladder list, and I'm very happy with it. I think it has a favorable matchup vs. anything your likely to face at the moment.

The New Cards

Aside from the mana base, this deck has 2 additions from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty -

Soulripper immediatly caught my eye during spoiler season as a card with a lot of potential. It's an absurdly above rate agressive card if you can constistently use its sac trigger, attacking for 5, then 6, then 7, with menace. If you play Soulripper on 2, thats 18 damage on turn 5! Consistently using the sac trigger is easier said then done though, so you can't include Soulripper in any deck, and 4 copies is almost certainly too much.

Its hard not to love The Wandering Emporer. Not only is it a super unique card, but it is also very strong in the current metagame. In creature mirrors, being able to give your creatures first strike (as well as impersonating Luminarch Aspirantimage) with its +1 is powerful, and against control decks, it serves as a removal spell for Goldspan Dragonimage that can't be countered or interacted with. It's a 4 mana card in a deck with a fairly low curve, and like most planeswalkers isn't great in multiples, so I think 2 is the right number, but you could play 3.

Other Card Choices

Adeline, Resplendent Catharimage and Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephaliaimage are aggressive creatures that provide repeatable sac fodder, which makes them great enablers for Mukotai Soulripperimage, as well as Rite of Oblivionimage and Deadly Disputeimage

Deadly Disputeimage and Shambling Ghastimage are very strong cards that massively improve the consistency of the deck. Ghast is absolutely brutal against aggressive decks, which often rely on one toughness creatures or can't beat an early The Meathook Massacreimage powered out by its treasure token. Dispute is an absurdly strong source of card advantage, which usually functions as a 1-mana draw 2 in this deck. Probably the best card in the deck.

Eyetwitchimage is mostly just 3 more copies of (worse) Shambling Ghast. 1-drops and sac fodder are really important, just having four isn't enough.

Rite of Oblivionimage and The Meathook Massacreimage are the (nonland) removal in the deck. Meathook is just busted, so it was a pretty obvious inclusion. I opted for Rite over Vanishing Verseimage in this deck because Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephaliaimage is such a good enabler for it. It also hits Jukai Naturalistimage and Hinata, Sun-Crowned which are both common must-kill threats in the format that Verse cannot answer.

Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivityimage is a very good card, and it's much stronger in this deck then in most. Both Adeline and Jadar make multiple bodies, which gets extra value from the backside and make it more likely to draw cards. Paladin Classimage doesn't provide as much value, but its another anthem effect with a lot of upside.

The Manabase

25 lands, including 2 Hagra Maulingimage for some instant-speed removal, 2 of each of the channel lands (Eiganjo, Seat of the Empireimage and Takenuma, Abandoned Mireimage which are nearly free ways to reduce flooding (plus, this deck runs 7 legendary creatures, which makes their effects cheaper), and some creature lands because they're good. Not much else to say about it really.

Hope this writeup was helpful :) Thanks for reading it ended up being much longer then intended.
