It isn't often you hear people going around claiming that they just created the best deck in the format (okay maybe people say it more often than they should), but with this list I think I may have truly create the best deck in Historic.
Just a few days ago a Historic Anthology was released into MTG Arena with a handful of insane powerhouse cards, and one broken card. I'm talking about Retrofitter Foundry. Not only is this card control against aggro, but it's aggo against control and combo against combo. Sky is the literal limit with this list and I have no doubt in my mind that if I continue to use it I can achieve rank 1 on the mythic ladder.
But now let's talk about how the deck works;
So first off you have the decks namesake, Retrofitter Foundry. There is so much to say about this card, yet so little is needed. I have had games against control where I'm attacking into them on t2 for 8 damage and closing out the game t3 because I kept a one lander with 2 Ornithopter's, a Universal Automaton and a Retrofitter Foundry. Other games I might play against aggro and have an Emry, Lurker of the Loch in play just cycling the same thopter to get a 4/4 blocker every turn while I develop my board and quickly take over the game. Retrofitter Foundry is, needless to say, broken and either people need to start preparing for it or continue to get steam-rolled by it.
Now for a spicy addition that just might be my favorite card/combo in the deck; Hope of Ghirapur or the HOG. Hope of Ghirapur is an insane 1 of in the mainboard that can literal make it a one player game against control decks or many combo deck. The combo is attacking with the HOG > Sacrificing it to make the opponent not able to cast non creature spells until your next turn > and then bringing it back with Emry, Lurker of the Loch > repeat until your opponent concedes. So the extra HOG in the sideboard is obviously an auto include against control.
In all honesty, this deck has the innate ability to run out of steam very very quickly if you don't have either a Retrofitter Foundry or an Emry, Lurker of the Loch to loop your threats and create new ones. But luckily Thought Monitor helps that out a little bit by not only being a 2/2 flyer with the ability to carry Nettlecyst, but also draws us 2 cards for potentially 1 mana! Nothing feels better than drawing one of these guys in the mid to late game.
Karn, Scion of Urza is an interesting addition to this list because not only does it give you card advantage when you need it, but it also creates constructs that often times end up being anywhere from 5/5's to 9/9's. I think it's a pretty important one of for those grindy match ups but can often times be boarded out unless you are playing against midrange or some control lists.
I guess now lets talk about some sideboard choices:
And I think that just about covers it! If you have any questions please comment below or whatever you want to do. But please try the deck, I went from diamond 4 to top 500 mythic in like a day and a half with it, and had around a 75% win rate during it. The deck has an amazing spot in the meta and Retrofitter Foundry will probably get banned once people find this list.
