Haunted Dead

Average Last Seen At: 3.39
Total Times Seen 41
Pro Rating: 3.5
Pro Comment: 4-mana for a 2/2 and a 1/1 Flyer is decent, and this can keep coming back from your graveyard! Discarding two cards might sound steep, but in this format, you can get a ton of upside out of discarding cards.
Byway Courier
Average Picked At: 5.93
Total Times Picked: 40
Average Last Seen At: 5.99
Total Times Seen 189
Pro Rating: 3.5
Pro Comment: This is good at trading off for things, and the Clue it gives you means you’re going to get a 2-for-1.
Stromkirk Occultist
Average Picked At: 5.73
Total Times Picked: 11
Average Last Seen At: 3.60
Total Times Seen 39
Pro Rating: 4.0
Pro Comment: They downshifted this to Rare, which is pretty spicy! A three mana 3/2 Trample isn’t a bad starting point, so when you add in the Madness upside and the fact that this can effectively draw you cards, and we’re talking about an incredibly efficient and powerful creature.
Geier Reach Bandit // Vildin-Pack Alpha
Average Picked At: 4.50
Total Times Picked: 14
Average Last Seen At: 4.18
Total Times Seen 46
Pro Rating: 4.0
Pro Comment: A three mana 3/2 with Haste is a great starting point, and when this transforms it not only gets +1/+1 – it also makes it so all of your werewolves immediately transform when they enter the battlefield, which is a pretty big upgrade.
Wolfkin Bond
Average Picked At: 9.86
Total Times Picked: 29
Average Last Seen At: 10.15
Total Times Seen 316
Pro Rating: 3.0
Pro Comment: This is a surprisingly good Aura, and one you’re usually going to want one of in your Green decks. 5 mana is a lot, but the fact this gives you a 2/2 means that you do a good job of mitigating against the risk of getting 2-for-1’d.
Hope Against Hope
Average Picked At: 11.00
Total Times Picked: 9
Average Last Seen At: 6.65
Total Times Seen 88
Pro Rating: 1.0
Pro Comment: This Aura isn’t really worth the downside. Sure, it can offer a massive boost – but there are times where it doesn’t offer a big enough one to off-set how dangerous playing this card is. Your board already has to be good in most scenarios, too. Getting 2-for-1’d is a big enough risk that you need your Auras to do more than this.
Mad Prophet
Average Picked At: 6.45
Total Times Picked: 11
Average Last Seen At: 5.53
Total Times Seen 69
Pro Rating: 2.0
Pro Comment: This is a nice repeatable way to get Madness going, but the stat-line means it dies to several one mana removal spells in the format, and that downside hurts.
Assembled Alphas
Average Picked At: 2.33
Total Times Picked: 6
Average Last Seen At: 2.33
Total Times Seen 9
Pro Rating: 3.0
Pro Comment: A six-mana 5/5 isn’t particularly good, but it does punish your opponent fairly harshly for blocking it! It is effectively impossible to block by anything with less than 3 toughness, and no matter what the Alphas do make sure to do some damage in the process. That said, the situations where you can’t attack feel pretty bad with this thing, since it isn’t a particularly good blocker.
Tree of Perdition
Average Picked At: 9.67
Total Times Picked: 3
Average Last Seen At: 6.05
Total Times Seen 24
Pro Rating: 1.5
Pro Comment: A 0/13 can block most things, and the ability can definitely be useful sometimes – but if your opponent has more than 13 life it doesn’t do a whole lot.
Abundant Maw
Average Picked At: 9.86
Total Times Picked: 7
Average Last Seen At: 7.38
Total Times Seen 108
Pro Rating: 2.5
Pro Comment: This has a big body and Lightning Helixes your opponent, so its hard to go wrong there! Especially because Black has plenty of good sacrifice fodder for Emerge.
Fiend Binder
Average Picked At: 11.11
Total Times Picked: 28
Average Last Seen At: 9.29
Total Times Seen 278
Pro Rating: 2.5
Pro Comment: The stat-line is ugly for the cost, but tapping down an opposing creature every time it attacks can allow you to do tons of damage.
Archangel Avacyn // Avacyn, the Purifier
Average Picked At: 1.50
Total Times Picked: 4
Average Last Seen At: 1.50
Total Times Seen 4
Pro Rating: 5.0
Pro Comment: This card is absolutely absurd in Limited. A 5-mana 4/4 with Flying, Vigilance, and Flash is already great – and she is significantly better than that! Making your whole board indestructible allows you to set up all kinds of advantageous blocks, and you can even flash her in to block something! Her transformation is pretty potent too, though there are occasionally times where it isn’t super advantageous.
Graf Rats
Average Picked At: 11.06
Total Times Picked: 17
Average Last Seen At: 9.19
Total Times Seen 251
Pro Rating: 1.0
Pro Comment: You don’t play this unless you’re very desperate for a two drop or you have Midnight Scavengers.
Gavony Unhallowed
Average Picked At: 11.53
Total Times Picked: 17
Average Last Seen At: 9.38
Total Times Seen 280
Pro Rating: 2.0
Pro Comment: This starts with some pretty bad stats, but it can definitely grow in this format, especially in a deck like Black-White, which has a substantial amount of Sacrifice stuff.
Morkrut Necropod
Average Picked At: 13.55
Total Times Picked: 29
Average Last Seen At: 11.44
Total Times Seen 396
Pro Rating: 2.5
Pro Comment: This is a pretty scary creature. A 7/7 with Menace is a real pain to block! It does come with a pretty big downside, but giving up expendable creatures or lands to swing with this thing isn’t too shabby.
Distended Mindbender
Average Picked At: 2.00
Total Times Picked: 9
Average Last Seen At: 2.00
Total Times Seen 12
Pro Rating: 3.0
Pro Comment: Sometimes you get a 3-for-1 with this, which feels incredible! Most of the time you’ll be able to get at least a 2-for-1. There will be times when your opponent’s hand is empty and it doesn’t do anything, and those moments are going to stink – but you’re still talking about a 5/5, which is relevant on almost any board.
Ember-Eye Wolf
Average Picked At: 10.12
Total Times Picked: 26
Average Last Seen At: 8.44
Total Times Seen 267
Pro Rating: 2.5
Pro Comment: This overperformed last time. A lot of the time, this sort of creature that can buff its power for mana isn’t very impressive, because you end up having to spend a lot of mana just to make it trade. However, adding Haste to the mix, along with a useful creature type, makes a significant difference. This even has a bit of Fireball potential in the late game.
Gisela, the Broken Blade
Average Picked At: 1.67
Total Times Picked: 3
Average Last Seen At: 1.67
Total Times Seen 3
Pro Rating: 4.0
Pro Comment: Don’t count on transforming her, but you don’t really need to. Most of her value comes from her extreme efficiency and all those keywords.
Fogwalker
Average Picked At: 9.42
Total Times Picked: 26
Average Last Seen At: 8.43
Total Times Seen 244
Pro Rating: 2.5
Pro Comment: This does not tap down a creature – keep that in mind! It only keeps it from untapping, so if the creature isn’t already tapped, its ETB ability doesn’t do anything. A two man ⅓ with Skulk is definitely difficult to block, though, and this even has a useful creature type.
Ever After
Average Picked At: 1.00
Total Times Picked: 3
Average Last Seen At: 1.25
Total Times Seen 4
Pro Rating: 3.0
Pro Comment: Loading the graveyard is pretty easy in this format, and because this can reanimate two things, you have a pretty reasonable chance to bring back 6+ mana worth of cards.
