Modern Horizons 3 Spoilers - Fetchlands, New Emrakul, & More

We recently got our first batch of spoilers for the highly anticipated Modern Horizons 3, which will be released in June. The first two releases (MH1 & 2) shook up the format, and these preview cards seem just as powerful. We've got new Eldrazi, two-sided planeswalkers, and more. Today, I'll cover all of the Modern Horizons 3 spoilers we've seen so far, discuss them, and look at some exciting reprints. So, without further ado, let's get started.

Planeswalker Leak

Modern Horizons 3 Spoilers (Breakdown)

So, you've seen the cards; now, let's break down a few of the more interesting ones.

Emrakul, the World Anew

Emrakul is back and as busted as ever! This time, she is a 12-mana 12/12, with flying, and when you cast it, you gain control of all the creatures a target player controls. Whew. Stealing someone's entire board is a pretty nasty ETB trigger - Especially because it's not for a turn... You get to keep them until Emrakul leaves play. When she does, you'll sac them and any other creatures you may have. So, in the worst-case scenario, you've got a nice boardwipe.

Moving on, it has protection from spells and from permanents that were cast the turn the turn she enters play. This makes the card almost impossible to remove onsite, and flashing in blockers after the ETB trigger won't save you either. And then, as if this was not enough, the cherry on top is the madness cost.

In the typical late-night infomercial "order in the next five minutes, and we'll slash the cost in half!" style, you can cast Emrakul for only six colorless mana as you discard her. The first thing that comes to mind for Modern are the Tron lands (Urza's Tower, Urza's Powerplant, and Urza's Mine), which could cast the card as early as turn three is you could discard it for a single mana.

We haven't had creatures that transformed into planeswalkers since Magic Origins in 2015, and I'm glad to see them returning. My favorite is Kytheon, Hero of Akros // Gideon, Battle-Forged, but there is one for each color, and you can check out the other four original flippable walkers if you've not seen them. Those aside, let's get back to Ajani.

When it enters the battlefield, you'll make a 2/1 cat token. This means that Ajani here is putting a total of 3/4 worth of power and toughness (spread over two bodies) for two mana. Pretty solid.

Then, whenever one or more of your cats die, you exile Ajani and return him to the battlefield as a planeswalker, which does quite a lot. The +2 peppers all of your cats with +1/+1 counters, the 0 ability gives you another 2/1 body and can be burn/removal if you have another red permanent. It's worth mentioning that if you're playing this as your commander, you won't be able to deal damage with this, thanks to the mono-white color identity.

And lastly, the -4 ability is a would-be boardwipe that allows your opponents to choose one non-land permanent for each primary permanent type to keep and forces them to sacrifice the rest. While this isn't the most backbreaking effect ever to grace a planeswalker, it's always a potential reset button for opposing board states.

Allied-Color Fetch Lands

We got the enemy-colored fetch lands reprinted in Modern Horizons 2, and they've maintained a reasonably low price since then. Now, thanks to MH3, we'll also have reprints of the allied color fetches, which is excellent. I can't tell you how long I've debated getting Polluted Delta for my Modern mill deck and kept putting it off. Once these drop, and the price comes down, you can rest assured that I'll pick some up.

These lands are great in all eternal formats where they're legal and commander. So, these much-needed reprints should positively impact a high percentage of the MTG player base.
