Been a minute but I'm back to making some more decks after finishing up college. This one is pretty basic and it's all about Skrelv, Defector Mite . There were two ways I saw this being built. The first was using the mite as a Mother of Runes but in the command zone to protect your board in white aggro. I'm still not sure that's not the best way to do it. However, I wanted to lean into us getting a new mechanic like toxic and try to push this into a poison counter wins decks.
Importantly this means we broke down the deck into protection, creatures we want to hit our opponent, and evasion granting abilities.
For protection your looking to put your Ephemarate style cards to protect at a discount. God's Willing and Brave the Elements also being notable protection for your board in some matchups. This means that even though your creatures aren't always the best this can let you keep them through bad trades or keep them on the field given removal happens since you are using Skrelv aggressively. The most important thing is to keep a creature and Skrelv alive.
Next we have our creatures and you're mainly looking to give double strikers toxic 1 so that you can get 2 poison counters on your opponent. Since they die at 10 poison counters this is absolutely massive. Turning cards like Fencing Ace into the ace of our deck. Jawbone Duelist is notably the best of these with the innate double strike and toxic 1 already on the card. Getting toxic 1 stacks so that's 4 poison counters on a single attack. Which is absolutely massive for closing out games quickly. We also picked cards that had evasion like Gingerbrute and Swooping Lookout for when we need to potentially work around decks with multiple colors or colorless blockers. Gratefull Apparition helping to proliferate poison counters is great since you can give it Toxic with Skrelv and then proliferate it functionally giving it similar speed to your double strikers. However this can also be huge when using Duelists Heritage to give it double strike. You'll get both toxic and both proliferate triggers. Which is on paper one of the fastest ways to win us the game is Skrelv into Apparition into Heritage and t4 into Staff of Compleation gives us an on upkeep t5 win.
As for our other cards that grant evasion we have Eater of Virtue that can give double strike or flying to creatures if the initial creature it was equipped to dies. Key to the City Giving us the option to make things straight unblockable is also really amazing here. With things that give flying in Wings of Hubris and Cloak of the Bat just having a reasonable second option like haste and one turn unblockable built in.
One of the stars of the deck is Manafold Key this is because Skrelv is an artifact creature. Which means Manafold key can either function as a way to make a creature unblockable. But also as a way to Untap Skrelv to offer up more protection or to give toxic to multiple creatures to swing in or even to give one creature protection from two colors and effectively give it toxic 2. This is absolutely nutty.
Currently after just 10 games the deck sits at 90% win rate. With 75% on the draw and 100% on the play. I know with this small sample size the percentages don't really matter but I want to start including them with why I see potential in this list at least as a quick games one because really they have the answers or you do or they don't or you don't. The games are over really quick but its always a really good time.
For removal you keep a lot of the cheap white removal like Swords to Plowshares and Fragment REality in addition to Lay Down Arms and Ossification. You want removal at 1 or 2 ideally with a few at 3 that can hit multiple things so that you have more than just creature removal.
Hope you like the deck and leave me a comment with anything you would change! I love iterating on deck ideas. You can find the deck video to see it in action as well over to the right. Thanks!
