"Special Guests" MTG Cards - Everything You Need To Know
Magic: The Gathering has more information to digest and keep up with now than ever. We got our first look at Lost Caverns of Ixalan spoilers in yesterday's preview panel. We saw several new cards, got to hear a fair bit about the plot, covered the new LOTR Collector Boosters, and learned about a brand new class of reprints called "Special Guests," which is the topic of today's article. I'll cover what they are, where you can get them, and more. Here is everything you need to know about the new "Special Guests" MTG Cards.
What Are Special Guests Cards?
Special Guests is a new reprint class introduced with Lost Caverns of Ixalan. They are "highly desirable, Masters release–level reprints" that appear in sets where they're conceptual fits. They will have new art and flavor texts that fit whichever set they're featured.
That said, they are "non-cannon" characters, and their inclusion in a set doesn't mean they're actually on that plane in a lore or story sense. Furthermore, being printed in a Standard-legal set as a special guest does not make the card standard-legal. Instead, it remains legal in whatever formats it's already legal in. This same concept is applied to the list cards or other "bonus sheet" style mini-sets.
Each special guest card has the expansion code for the set that it's a guest of and a collector number in the information below the text box.
Where Can You Get Special Guest Cards?
Special Guest cards can appear in Set and Collector Boosters. Much like The List cards, every so often, one card in your booster pack has a chance to be upgraded to a Special Guest card. Cards from Set Boosters will be non-foil versions, and Collector Boosters will have foil versions. And these start with Lost Caverns of Ixalan but will continue to be a part of each new release moving forward.
