Meet Themberchaud, MTGs Thickest Dragon - DnD Secret Lair Bonus Card

We've had quite a few MTG/DnD crossover's now. I  recently covered the newest one with the leaked spoilers for the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie secret lair. You can find that article here if you're interested. Now, we also have the secret bonus card to look at and it's quite something. Today I'll be covering the card itself and the Dungeons & Dragons lore that makes it so great. So, without further ado, let's take a look at Themberchaud.

DnD Secret Bonus Card

Let's start at the top - Themberchaud is mono-red and costs a total of seven mana. Four of any color and three red. He's a 5/5 legendary Dragon with Trample. When he enters the battlefield, he deals x damage to each other creature without flying and each player, where x is the number of mountains you control. Lastly, you may exert him as he attacks. and if you do, he gains flying until the end of turn and doesn't untap during your next untap step.

Overall, the card is pretty amazing. He's a repeatable board wipe that can nuke the board for everything without flying and throw around a lot of damage at players - Especially if you can get ahead on mountains. Red isn't the best color for the traditional "put extra lands onto the battlefield" ramp but there are some nice options nevertheless.

Furthermore, if you load your deck down with creatures with flying, the ETB effect will be one-sided as far as the creature portion goes. There are also ways to abuse enter the battlefield effects and make use of the damage that he does to players as well. Keep in mind that he'll also be dealing damage to you when he comes into play.

Flavor And Lore

From a flavor and lore perspective, Themberchaud is phenomenal. 

For those who don't know, Themberchaud is an adult (500-600 years old) dragon that lives in the "Underdark" near the city of Duergar. He has a mutual "working relationship" with the Dark Dwarves of the city where he provides fire for their forges (and doesn't incinerate them) and in return receives gifts and food.

It is due to this partnership (and that he is a complete glutton) that he finds himself less than fit. WOTC even nods to this with the fact that he has to exert himself to fly. I love the fact that they did, as it fits the character perfectly and is quite funny. Keeping on this theme, his enter the battlefield effect is identical to Earthquake. So, he lands, causes an earthquake that demolishes everything on the ground, and then has to work very hard to get airborne again.

And I must say, I'm not surprised. I mean, scroll up and look at that wing-to-body ratio. Overall, Themberchaud is said to be a destructive, arrogant, hedonist. However, if you go sleuth around on the internet, you'll find that fans find the chunky dragon who struggles to fly quite endearing and I cannot help but agree.
