Secret Lair x Brain Dead - Multiple Drops Announced
Wizards of the Coast is teaming up with Los Angeles-based art collective Brain Dead for an interesting Secret Lair drop this summer. This marks a new collaboration for MTG, where the game's branding is used to create unique products with other companies. The style is quite weird and won't be for everyone. That said, there are some nice card choices. So, without further ado, let's jump into the Secret Lair x Brain Dead drop(s).
Secret Lair x Brain Dead Info
Who Is Brain Dead
Brain Dead isn't a single artist but a group of artists and designers collaborating under that name. This allows them to create art with broader styles and influences. Based in Los Angeles, Brain Dead's style is described as "bold," "unconventional," and with a "defiant approach." They've previously released a clothing line featuring MTG logos and art, showcasing their art style, which you can check out here.
Three Secret Lair Drops
The Brain Dead x Secret Lair collaboration will feature three distinct drops, available for purchase from July 29th to August 18th, 2024. Each drop is priced at the usual $29.99 with a Foil Edition available at $39.99 each. In addition to these drops through WOTC, Brain Dead will launch a collection of Secret Lair x Brain Dead merchandise on July 30th.
Here is a look at the three drops and what they contain.
Creatures
This drop features iconic MTG creatures like Wurmcoil Engine and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, but with a twist – all-new art designed by the Brain Dead team. Notably, this drop includes the first reprint of Chaotic Goo since its original release in Tempest.
The full contents are:
- Wurmcoil Engine
- Chaotic Goo
- Consecrated Sphinix
- Meteor Golem
- Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
Lands
In a separate drop, we've got two of each basic land with some brand-new, out there art. While they are weird, I'm pretty fond of them but I know some people don't. Comment and let me know what you think. The full contents of the lands drop is as follows:
- x2 Plains
- x2 Island
- x2 Swamp
- x2 Mountain
- x2 Forest
Staples
This drop features essential Commander cards like Sol Ring and Lightning Greaves but with a surprising twist – the art for some of these cards is replaced with photographs of MTG-inspired tattoos. I must say that having some random dude's arm on a card looks pretty janky. That said, the "staples" portion is certainly true and while not expensive, these cards are some of the most universally playable in EDH.
